Chem 112- We will do some practice problems for review in groups. Your answers will be done on large paper and posted on the classroom walls so you can check your answers. I will sign exemption forms today. I have gone over the format of the exam.
Chem 122- We spent some more time on practising an old exam. We did this in groups
Jan 13-Tuesday
Chem 112-Review Sheet 4 is due today. In class we will do sheet 7 and it will be passed in at the end of class. Great work to those who worked so hard at completeing all of your review sheets ahead of time.
Chem 122- Today we will go over a case study question and we will do a quiz on the mini unit on kinetics. We started to work on an old exam with small groups of 3. We went over the format of the exam.

Chem 112-Today we will have a test on ch 6. Review sheet #4 is due today. Please do Sheet #4 for tomorrow.
chem 122-We finished the kinetics mini unit and worked on a worksheet and finished anything that was left over from ch 9 review sheet. Great work to those who worked so hard at completeing all of your review sheets ahead of time.

Chem 112 -Today we will go over the ideal gas law at two sets of conditions. A reminder that the review sheets for ch 6 and 8 are due on friday. We finished going over 6.2 theory questions after I did a homework check. Review sheet 4 is due for monday
Chem 122-Today we will work on Kinetics(mini unit). I will present some notes to you and then give you time to work on review for the exam.

Chem 122 P3,5-Today we have a test on Ch 15. It is worth 2 tests.
Chem 112-P2,4-Today we went over 6.2 questions 1 to 10 from the theory on 6.2 and I did a homework check on 6.2.(1 to 10) We went over the ideal gas law and did questions 24 to 27 and 29 on p 213. The review sheets for Ch 6 and 8 are due on friday. Please complete the theory questions from 6.2 tonight.

Chem 112 P2,4-We went over the ideal gas law in class and p 2 did 24, 25 as homework.We went over Boyles(review from 6.1) and Charles Law with examples. Please finish 6.2 theory questions tonight. Also complete the rest of the VSEPR sheet(bottom)

Chem 122 P3,5-Today we went over titration curves, polyprotic, monoprotic, buffers, and most topics from the weekend assignment that you did before the christmas break. The excess calculation assignment is due tomorrow.
Chem 112-P2,4-We will do some work with VSEPR. The top part of the handout is for tonight's homework. Please work on 6.2 theory questions tonight. I will assign 1 to 10. I will also do a homework check on section 1 that was to be completed the friday before the holidays.

We checked over the answers to the molecular formula questions. I also went over using lewis electron dot diagrams to figure out molecular formulas. I passed back the solvay process questions.

Chem 112 P2,4-We will do a homework check on the worksheet from last thursday. I will overview making a standard solution from a solution and from a solid. We will go over one example from each side of the handout on making standard solutions. We will finish the calculation for finding molecular formula. Period 4 Your independent assignment is due today. New work p 277 Predicting molecular formula. Please do p 277 #38 a to e

Chem 112P2, 4- We will go over p 239-244 on calculating mass of a substance required to make certain volume of a solution of a certain concentration.Period 4-do not forget that the independent assignment is due today.
p 241 #36 to 39 was assigned. You will define some titration terms. p 272 #31 and 32 are to be done for monday. Do not forget the work that you were given yesterday for monday.

Chem 112 P2, 4- There will be a test next wednesday on ch 7 and 8. Today we will go over molecular formula and finish our work on Lewis electron dot diagrams and structural diagrams. You will work with polar and nonpolar molecules. We will spend some time overviewing the solvay process. We will also go over how to calculate molecular formula. The bottom right hand side of the handout will be completed.Today you will receive a worksheet to be done for monday of next week. It deals with making standard solutions.
Chem 112 P2-Today we will do lab day 4. The weekend assignment(/54) is due today.

Chem 112 P4-Today we will go over some notes on ionic and molecular bonding and the differences between each. The weekend assignment was passed out today. It is due on friday. We will go over our answers to the work from yesterday on empirical formula. The theory questions from ch 8 were checked as a big homework check. If time permits we will spend more time on drawing Lewis dot diagrams and structural diagrams. p 275 #33 to #36 were assigned as homework.
Chem 122 P5-We will do a quiz on the 5 step process. The weekend assignment is due on thursday. We will spend some time on titration calculations. The following questions will be assigned: p 550 #45 and #47. Hopefully we will watch some of the video on acids and bases.

Chem 122 P3-I will give you some time to work on the weekend assignment. We went over some 5 step questions. There will be a quiz on this on tuesday of next week. We worked on questions in pairs on the 5 step process.
Chem 112 P4-We will work for half of the class in pairs on the solvay process and the other part of the class will be a quiz on mass/mass stoichiometry. We went over Bonding. I assigned some structures to draw.

Chem 112 p2-Today we had a major homework check on the theory questions. I had you copy down the 10 reactions for tomorrows labs.You must do the ten reactions before thursday because they must be passed in, in order to get into the lab on thursday. A copy of the word information for the ten reactions is below. Please note the reactions must be balanced, and have the proper states. I went over the four labs in lab set 2.
Chem 122 p 3-Today we went over the five step process and finished the group work we started yesterday. The following questions must be completed for tomorrow. p 532 18 and 19, and 16. I passed out a graphing assignment that is due on friday of this week. Chem 112 P4-Lab Day 4 Chem 122 p5-We went over the answers to yesterday's work and then did some notes on indicators. I assigned p 528 13 and 14 and p 526 #12. We started some group work on acid base chemistry. I hope to show you some more of the video that we started last friday.

Chem 122 P3-Today we will go over conjugate acids and bases. I will be demonstrating the conjugate acid /base concept with indicators.
Questions 11 to 15 will be assigned. If time permits we will do some group work.
Chem 122 P5- We will be doing the same work as period three did on tuesday and thursday. We must really do some serious catching up as there have been so many interruptions to period five. Do not forget to do the theory questions for monday.

Chem 122 P3, P5-Major test on Chapter 9 today. It is worth two tests because we have spent so much time on this unit.

Chem 112 P2-Today we went over the assumptions of stoichiometry and I also assigned the rest of the page 225 12, 13, 14. I did a homework check and we watched part of a video on bonding.
Chem 112 P4-Today we went over the homework from yesterday(9, 10 and 11). I passed out a worksheet with more stoichiometry on it. In class you worked on the left top corner(1 to 5). This is to be completed along with the top right part of the worksheet( 1 to 6) for next wednesday. You will be going to the lab on thursday, friday , monday and tuesday. You must do the ten reactions before thursday because they must be passed in, in order to get into the lab on thursday. A copy of the word in formation for the ten reactions is below. Chem 122 P3-Today we started ch 15 and I went over revised arrhenius concept. After watching part of a video on acids and bases and their properties, we spent some additional time on group review for tomorrow's test. I assigned 1 and 2ab today.

Chem 112 Today we started gravimetric stoichiometry. (mass/mass problems) I went over a detailed example, then we worked on p 225 #9, 10 and 11. This is to be completed as homework, as well as p 159 47 a, c,e .

We worked on group naming and reactions to get ready for the test, which I had to change to wednesday due to a surprise assembly during period 4 which meant there was no period 5 class. Your pamphlets were passed in today.
Chem 122 P5-There was no class today. Several students picked up the polymer fill in the blank sheet
and checked on their organic assignment that was due today. This can be passed in tomorrow.

Chem 122- Today we will overview the reactions and check over #14 and some of the other questions in groups. We will put our answers on posters for everyone to check over. Chem 112-Today we will do some group review to practise typical types of questions on the test for chapter 4. We will finish the work on the exercise 4B from friday. We also went over last nights homework.
Chem 122-Today we will spend some time on reactions and overview them. We will finish our last two families...the amides and amines. There will be a test on Nov 25(next tuesday) Please do the following questions from the handout: sheet 4(reactions) and sheet 6(aromatics to end of ch 9)

Chem 112-More solubility today with molecular substances. p 153 #38 all (a mixture of both ionic and molecular substances)
We will overview all types of reactions with a powerpoint presentation(tomorrow). We will change particles to moles(we only had time in period 4 for this). Please do 1to 5 and 1 to 5 from mole worksheet(bottom left).
Chem 122-Quiz on first 4 families(alkanesand cycloalkanes, alkenesand cis/trans isomers, alkynes and aromatics) for tomorrow. We will also go on to the newest families the alkyl halides, alcohols. I assigned the following p 314 #15, p 315 #17 and p 316 # 18 ...please use the example of eliminationfrom the top of p 321 as an example.
Nov 12-Wednesday -We looked over the Chem 122 midterms today-You will receive an email of marks tonight and your parents will receive an email later in the week
Chem 112- Today we will go over solubility and the rules for it. The following will be done during class : p 152 #36 a,c,e,g etc (every second one) I will then assign p 155 #44 all that will use solubility with single and double replacement reactions. We will see a demo that shows how solubility can be used to predict reactions.
Chem 122- Today we will go over the cis and trans isomers. We fixed the questions on the previous practise sheet on alkenes and alkynes.. I did a homework check of several in the chapter questions that were previously assigned.(This will be done on thursday...homework check) I assigned sheet #2 on aromatics and cyclo compounds. We did some more group work.

--> There will be a remembrance day ceremony today from 10:30 to 11: 30. This means we will go to period two, go down to the assembly , then come back and resume period 2. This means period three will not happen today.
Chem 112- We went over combustion reactions today. We also went over the common oxides.
Chem 122-Period 5- We worked on a organic review of the first 4 families after we went over some examples for dealing with isomers of xylene. We also will be having a quiz on thursday covering alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, cycloalkanes and aromatics.

Chem 112-We went over single and double replacement reactions. You received a major assignment that will be due on November 14. I

Chem 122-Today we will start our work on Chapter 9 Organic Chemistry. We will be naming alkanes today and drawing isomers. I will assign p 302 5,6,7 omit 6b and 7c for homework. You will receive some theory questions for 9.1 . These must be done for thursday.

Chem 112-Today we will be learning how to balance equations. The bottom right worksheet will be assigned(number 4). We will also check over the answers to #21 from friday(we will check over 21 tomorrow and check worksheet 1 too). New demo: Hydrogen peroxide and a catalyst.
chem 122-Today is lab day 4 In order to get the labs marked before the report card, I need to have you complete lab work by the end of today. For this reason the lab will be open both at noon hour and after school. Those students who have missed labs will need to come in at noon today.

Chem 112-Today we did another homework check (yes we are trying to build up your homework mark) Today you were introduced to Avogadros number and the ten comolements and mole day. Chem 112- P2, 4 We will start Chapter 4 on reactions. You will work on some theory on Ch 4.1, do p 133 1 to 5. We will go over molar mass calculations.P 144 # 19 all and p 139 #12a,c and #13 a,c will be assigned as homework. Demo: Sulfuric acid reacts with sodium hydroxide.
Chem 122-P3,5 Test Chapter 14 We will be going to the lab tomorrow. Please remember to not wear contact lenses or open-toed footwear. Please note: students who did not have me for Chem 112--> all lab work to to be done in lab, so this means that no lab answer sheets leave the lab and must be sumitted in the proper basket at the end of class. Chem 112-P 2, 4- We went over some answers from some of the worksheets. Today we went over molecular naming.(p 114 bottom and p 116 top). The following questions were assigned: p 116 49, 50 and 51 ace. We went over the properties of Acids, Bases, Molecular, Ionic Neutral using yesterday's results from the demo. I outlined the assignment(mini project ) that is due on monday. Homework for tonight: finish textbook questions and do sheet 2 from handout.
Chem 122 P3, 5-Today we worked on Kb calculations. The following calculation questions were assigned...p 511 35 to 38 and 34 Students going with the community college field trip or to cross country will want to look over and carefully read p 510 and 511. Note that Kb x Ka = Kw so the Kb values for the bases in the table can be found by substituting Ka and Kw into the formula. Answers to the questions are 36 7.7 x 10^-10mol/L, 37. 4.2 x 10^-10 mol/L 38. 1.4 x 10^-11 mol/L . Homework for tonight: Design a study tool/game/innovative idea to pass in on monday that will help you know all of the Nobel prize winners from p 509.(there will be a matching question on this on tuesday's test). Today period 5 brought in some samples and found the pH and were assigned 36 and 37 from p 511. They have to get the review assignment for monday tomorrow.

Chem 122 P5-Today we went over acid ionization constant or Ka. I went over an example to show how you can calculate Ka from pH. The assigned questions were p 508-509 #31,32 and 33. Chem 122 P 3-There will be a quiz on Le Chatelier, writing reactions with equilibrium arrows, Equilibrium Law and pOH and PH as well as hydrogen ion/hydroxide ion concentration. We went over percent ionization and worked on p 506 #28 to #30.

New work for today: Ternary Irregular Compounds which have an unual number of oxygen atoms in their formula. Assigned work ...list all of the regular and irregular polyatomic compounds for the purple table you have been filling in from phosphate to acetate attached to sodium. Finish sheet 1 and three from the handout you were given yesterday.

Do not forget that the assignment from yesterday is due friday(tomorrow). Please study for your ch 2 test.

Chem 112 P2, 4- Today we went over the scientists and the periodic table as a review. Several passed in items were returned to you. I went over energy level models for the reaction of atoms to make ions. I gave you time to work on p 85 41, 43 and 42, 44 to 47. You received an assignment for friday that reviewed atoms ions and isotopes. If you pass this in a day early, you will receive an additional 10% on the assignment. Chem 112 P 2, 4-Today we did a quiz on metric and lab safety. I went over STEEP,WHMIS, MSDS, overviewed the Scientific Problem solving Model and went over 1 to 4b. I also did a homework check on notes and text questions form the past week. Tonight you are to do the worksheet on Common Chemical Compounds (bottom). p 37 #39 and 40 were assigned. We will be having a tewst next tuesday on chapter 1. Reminder--> friday you will need water soluble markers.
Chem122 P3,5-Today We worked went over notes on calorimeters and did some calculations. I assigned p357 #29 and 30. We worked on completeing the pair work from yesterday on 53/54.

Chem112P2,4-Today we went over some of the metric calculations from the worksheet you received yesterday. We then worked for half of the class in the lab on lab safety and half of the class on p41 #33 to 37 and the top two parts of a handout dealing with formulas and names for common chemical compounds. This meant you had to copy the table from p 215 first into your notebooks. There will be a metric conversion and lab safety quiz tomorrow. Chem 122 P3,5-Today we went over #21 in class. Please make sure you check over 22a and b and complete them if you had troubles with them. We went over enthalpy changes and signs. Remember EXO is negative and ENDO is positive. I assigned p 354 #23 to 26 to be completed for tomorrow. I also gave you the delta E total assignment that is due for thursday. We started some pair work on 53/54. Reminder--> Test next monday.

This is to be worked on quietly and finished as homework. You will also be writing an evaluation and synthesis following the directions from the other handout(problem solving model). This is to be neatly written on loosleaf or done on the computer and printed out. Do not forget the headings Evaluation and Synthesis. p 581 and 582 will be helpful. this is due on tuesday. Chem 112 P2,4-Today you had a supply teacher. She had you do several things including making up some notes, putting some diagrams into your notebook, doing an exercise using the periodic table and making up a list of the 10 rules that you felt were most important from the list in the glossary at the back of your book. Chem 122 P3,5-Today we will be checking over the enthalpy calculations and practising heating and cooling curves. I will also be doing a homework check and taking in the assignment on naming compounds. You will be working with some partners and displaying your answers. Since I was absent you worked on figuring out heating and cooling curves yourself or with a partner. Chem 112- Today we will go over solubility and the rules for it. The following will be done during class : p 152 #36 a,c,e,g etc (every second one) I will then assign p 155 #44 all that will use solubility with single and double replacement reactions. We will see a demo that shows how solubility can be used to predict reactions.Chem 122- Today we will go over the cis and trans isomers. We fixed the questions on the previous practise sheet on alkenes and alkynes.. I did a homework check of several in the chapter questions that were previously assigned.(This will be done on thursday...homework check) I assigned sheet #2 on aromatics and cyclo compounds. LAB 2/6--> You will be making a standard solution. Please be sure to fill up to the etched line on the volumetric flask. Please be sure to not wait too long between placing powder in container and adding acid solution. Caution: HCl(aq) should be handled cautiously
LAB 3/7 --> You are going to be working with a clock reaction which requires many timings...... a watch with a second hand will be helpful...divide work up. mix solutions carefully and distilled water ONLY or timings will be mixed up.
LAB 4/8--> You are working in classroom in dark so take care to keep goggles on and realize that you are working with KSCN with nitric acid mixed in.

I outlined the assignment(mini project ) that is due on monday. Homework for tonight: finish textbook questions and do sheet 2 from handout.Chem 122 P3, 5-Today we worked on Kb calculations. The following calculation questions were assigned...p 511 35 to 38 and 34 Students going with the community college field trip or to cross country will want to look over and carefully read p 510 and 511. Note that Kb x Ka = Kw so the Kb values for the bases in the table can be found by substituting Ka and Kw into the formula. Answers to the questions are 36 7.7 x 10^-10mol/L, 37. 4.2 x 10^-10 mol/L 38. 1.4 x 10^-11 mol/L . Homework for tonight: Design a study tool/game/innovative idea to pass in on monday that will help you know all of the Nobel prize winners from p 509.(there will be a matching question on this on tuesday's test). Chem 112 P2, 4- Another quiz today.......We worked on an assignment that reviewed most of the naming schemes that we already went over in class. Homework for the weekedn is to study fomulas from p 116, polyatomic ions from purple shee. there will be a quiz on tuesday and wednesday on this material..Chem 122 P 3-There will be a quiz on Le Chatelier, writing reactions with equilibrium arrows, Equilibrium Law and pOH and PH as well as hydrogen ion/hydroxide ion concentration. Chem 112 P 2, 4-We had our first quiz today on table 3.6 p 116. Please remember to study these formulas as we will have them on a quiz tomorrow along with the list of diatomics(lucky 7) which is from table 3.5 on p114. New work for today: Ternary Irregular Compounds which have an unual number of oxygen atoms in their formula. Assigned work ...list all of the regular and irregular polyatomic compounds for the purple table you have been filling in from phosphate to acetate attached to sodium. Finish sheet 1 and three from the handout you were given yesterday.Chem 122 P3- Today we went over #24 and then I gave time in class for you to work on the top two worksheets from the handout. Chem 112 P2, 4 -Today we went over RRR. We started Chapter 3. The first topic we went over was naming ionic compounds that are binary. You also defined ionic compound, molecular compound and inter-metallic compound in your notes. On p 107 #21 and #23 were assigned. These were completed in class. Chem 112 P2, 4- Today we went over the scientists and the periodic table as a review. Several passed in items were returned to you. I went over energy level models for the reaction of atoms to make ions. I gave you time to work on p 85 41, 43 and 42, 44 to 47. You received an assignment for friday that reviewed atoms ions and isotopes. If you pass this in a day early, you will receive an additional 10% on the assignment. Chem 112 P 2, 4-Today we did a quiz on metric and lab safety. I went over STEEP,WHMIS, MSDS, overviewed the Scientific Problem solving Model and went over 1 to 4b. I also did a homework check on notes and text questions form the past week. Tonight you are to do the worksheet on Common Chemical Compounds (bottom). p 37 #39 and 40 were assigned. We will be having a tewst next tuesday on chapter 1. Reminder--> friday you will need water soluble markers.Chem122 P3,5-Today We worked went over notes on calorimeters and did some calculations. I assigned p357 #29 and 30. We worked on completeing the pair work from yesterday on 53/54.

Chem112P2,4-Today we went over some of the metric calculations from the worksheet you received yesterday. We then worked for half of the class in the lab on lab safety and half of the class on p41 #33 to 37 and the top two parts of a handout dealing with formulas and names for common chemical compounds. This meant you had to copy the table from p 215 first into your notebooks. There will be a metric conversion and lab safety quiz tomorrow.
Chem 122 P3,5-Today we went over #21 in class. Please make sure you check over 22a and b and complete them if you had troubles with them. We went over enthalpy changes and signs. Remember EXO is negative and ENDO is positive. I assigned p 354 #23 to 26 to be completed for tomorrow. I also gave you the delta E total assignment that is due for thursday. We started some pair work on 53/54. Reminder--> Test next monday.

Chem 112 P2- Unfortunately I was sick on friday so as long as everything went well with the supply teacher we will be going into the lab today instead of friday. After I do a homework check we will be dividing up the class so that half will be in the lab and half will be in the class working on the worksheet printed out with metric questions. This is to be worked on quietly and finished as homework. You will also be writing an evaluation and synthesis following the directions from the other handout(problem solving model). This is to be neatly written on loosleaf or done on the computer and printed out. Do not forget the headings Evaluation and Synthesis. p 581 and 582 will be helpful. this is due on tuesday. For tomorrow, please complete 1 to 11 from the newest metric worksheet and read p 598 to 600 and write down what you feel to be the 10 most important safety rules.
